Currently we’re in a shift on not just on Substack but in our politics, and in our culture. A lot of systemic values we never questioned or simply took for granted have been found to be fraudulent or non-existent.
The old suppositions of trust for the masters of their respective universes are finally, at long last being scrutinized.
The biggest one currently, besides the soul searching that will be needed after Trump has departed from the scene, is America’s relationship with Israel.
Rarely is an issue so morally crystal clear in an era of human history as that of Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples.
In politics societal problems are often met from various points of entry along the ideological spectrum and compromise tends to be the rule of the day.
But not with this. Not now.
And there is something we can all do to have a direct impact on this issue especially on this platform.
You, the subscriber have more power here than you know. Because right now Substack’s only means of monetization is the paid subscription and indirectly those who share content from creators.
We often say boycott billionaires, or this big box store, or this service when all too often many of us can’t due to economic or geographic necessity.
But on this platform everything is a choice.
So I’m not asking for money for myself on this one. I’m asking you to boycott any Substacker who is not willing to call what’s happening to the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples a genocide. Any Substacker who will not call for the cessation of any and all aid to Israel until the genocide ceases should be boycotted.
This is an issue you can have tremendous impact here by simply refusing to pay, restack, share, view, like or have anything to do with their content.
For those of us who call ourselves liberal, progressive, leftists, socialists, democrats this has to be a bare minimum.
Demand to know where the content creators stand on this issue. No wiggle room. No equivocation. No bullshit.
“Israel is committing a genocide and I demand all military aid to Israel cease until they cease.”
That’s it. Do they agree with that baseline moral statement or not.
It’s not complicated.
Because if they waffle around it then it’s likely they want to appeal to something other than what’s morally right. It’s to appease advertisers, or PAC monied interests who are already handing out money for the 2026 midterms and it will be even more for 2028.
You’re going to hear this is a distraction. It’s not. It’s a moral test. A test of character.
“But I like their takes on other stuff!”
Fair enough but anyone can say the right words, but standing on principle when it matters means more or at least it should.
Because if they can’t be honest about this fundamental moral fact how can they be honest with you about issues that aren’t so cut and dry?
And you withdrawing your support and stating why will do more to shift opinion and policy than not ordering on Amazon.
You deserve transparency.
You deserve to know where people who claim to be advocating for you stand.
That those who claim to be giving you a cultural framework to interpret our murky political landscape aren’t taking you for a ride.
Ask them where they stand on this issue. If it’s not where it should be then boycott them.
It’s the least we can do on this platform and say we stand against genocide.
